Mission Team

The Mission Team at Bakerstown United Methodist Church is an active group, involved in all areas of the community, the country, and the world.  Global efforts include China Outreach Ministries, Casa Cielo Orphanage, in Hondouras, and the Heifer Foundation.

By supporting the Bethlehem Haven, located in downtown Pittsburgh, we are aiding their efforts of helping homeless women by providing shelter and supportive services and by collaborating with the community to end homelessness.

We continually support UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) a global humanitarian aid organization, in providing disaster relief in more than 80 countries.

Locally, we support  Hosanna Industries and “The Lighthouse,” a faith-based, volunteer-driven foundation, including a Food Bank, serving over 6,000 children, adults, seniors and families in Western Pennsylvania.

We assist the North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) , a nonprofit organization that addresses the spiritual, emotional, physical and material needs of people in crisis, hardship and poverty in Allegheny County. Mission dollars also go towards sustaining three Christian-based camps:  Wesley Woods, Jumonville, and Camp Allegheny.

The Mission Team has sent groups to Alajuela, Costa Rica, and  the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, to aid ministry efforts, home renovation, community giving, and sharing the Gospel.

Events that Matter Throughout the year, the Mission Team hosts different fun-filled events to support their efforts:

Junque Sale—A spring tradition, come to the church and hunt for treasures!  Get rid of yours and take some home!

Neighborhood Table

Bakerstown is continuing to partner with the Fox Chapel UMC to provide meals to the  Sharpsburg Community.

We serve a meal every 1st Tuesday of the month.

Volunteers are needed to help prepare the meal at BUMC starting at 2:30 PM. The meals are then transported to Sharpsburg and volunteers are  needed there to help serve and clean up afterwards. This has been a very rewarding ministry, please consider volunteering by calling Roger Cramer at 724-443-2847.

Roots of Faith, Neighborhood Table

Did you know that many of your BUMC friends have been preparing, transporting and serving a delicious hot meal to Sharpsburg area residents once a month?

Fox Chapel's Faith UMC started the Roots of Faith ministry in the Sharpsburg area, and it has blossomed into a growing ministry beyond serving meals. They have been setting up access to many other services to help the people in this distressed area, They are very  grateful for the help BUMC is providing by hosting one meal a month.

In order for this ministry to continue, we need your support.  Ways in which you can help are:

  • Helping prepare the meal at BUMC during the afternoon of the first Thursday of every month (we always have the first Thursday of the month)

  • Helping transport the meal to Sharpsburg and staying to serve helping to support the efforts of the Mission Team in this ministry with your monthly donations to the Pennies for Missions baskets.

Please watch your bulletin for upcoming dates and feel free to contact Roger Cramer at 724-443-2847 to volunteer or ask questions.

Drive Thru Dinners for the Lighthouse

Did you know members of the Bakerstown congregation have been preparing,  and serving a delicious hot meal to the clients of the Lighthouse Food Bank once per month?

At the beginning of the pandemic, the Mission Team was looking for a way to help in the community. We reached out to the lighthouse about serving a drive thru meal to the clients of the food pantry. This hot meal was welcomed with open arms by the clients and embraced fully by the congregation. Each month we serve anywhere from 150-200 meals.

In order for this ministry to continue, we need your support.  You can help in various ways by:

  • Helping prepare the meal at BUMC during the afternoon of the Tuesday after The Neighborhood Table of every month

  • Helping pack and deliver meals to the cars, talk or pray with the clients, clean up or make a monetary donation to help fund the meals

Please watch your bulletin for upcoming dates and feel free to contact Carol Skolnik at cnikskol@gmail.com to volunteer or ask questions.
